Pros and Cons at Tocumen Airport

Is Tocumen a Good Airport?

Tocumen International Airport is a major connection hub between South America and North America, as well as connecting to the main tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

It offers notable advantages such as its modern Terminal 2, a wide range of complementary services, alternatives for shopping or dining, and good connectivity with urban transportation. However, and despite the improvements in infrastructure, it continues to show weaknesses in terms of maintenance, customer service, and high costs in some services.

With the purpose of helping users optimize their experience and minimize or avoid airport defects, we will now analyze in detail the main strengths and weaknesses based on user experiences and aspects that often go unnoticed.

✅ Pros

1. Modern and Efficient Terminal 2

Terminal 2 stands out for its more modern and functional design compared to Terminal 1. It has more natural lighting, wide corridors, more comfortable waiting areas, and a better distribution of services. Cleaning and maintenance are constant, which contributes to a more pleasant experience for travelers. In addition, more options for restaurants and shops are usually found in this terminal.

2. Variety of Shops and Duty-Free

The airport houses multiple duty-free shops, perfumeries, jewelers, and souvenir shops. While some travelers have found good deals on electronics and liquor, others warn that prices are not always lower than in the city. For those looking to buy perfumes, chocolates, or alcohol, it is advisable to compare prices before making a purchase.

3. Accessibility with the Metro

One of the great advantages of Tocumen Airport is its connection with Line 2 of the Panama Metro, which allows travelers to travel to the city center in approximately 30-40 minutes for only $0.50. Unlike other airports where public transportation is limited or expensive, this alternative is economical and efficient. For those carrying a lot of luggage, it is important to consider that the stations can be crowded during peak hours.

4. Options for VIP Lounges

The airport has several VIP lounges, such as Copa Club and The Lounge Panama, which offer a more relaxed space for travelers seeking comfort during long layovers. These lounges have more comfortable seating, complimentary drinks and snacks, Wi-Fi, and some additional services such as showers. However, some reviews mention that the variety of food is limited compared to other international VIP lounges.

5. Clear Signage and Wide Areas

Unlike some airports where orientation can be confusing, Tocumen has well-distributed signage in Spanish and English, making it easier for travelers to find their boarding gate, immigration area, or connections. The flight information screens are well located and offer constant updates. In addition, the wide corridors in Terminal 2 avoid congestion, which does not occur in Terminal 1.

6. Wide Range of Complementary Services

Tocumen has ATMs, currency exchange offices, banks, pharmacies, and information centers, making it easier to solve unforeseen events during the trip. There is also a luggage storage service, useful for those making long layovers and wishing to explore the city without carrying suitcases.

7. Connection with Various Means of Transport

In addition to the metro, travelers can opt for taxis, buses, and private transportation services such as Uber and InDriver. Uber is generally cheaper than the official airport taxis, although drivers cannot always pick up passengers directly at the terminal without prior agreement.

8. Entertainment and Rest Areas

Although not without criticism, some waiting areas have entertainment options such as television screens and access to shops with varied products. In Terminal 2, there are spaces with more comfortable armchairs, ideal for those who have to wait for long connections.

9. Availability of Car Rentals

For those planning to tour Panama by car, the airport has multiple car rental agencies, which provides varied options in terms of price and availability. However, it is advisable to review the contracts well to avoid hidden charges.

10. Good Flight Frequency

Tocumen is an airport with a large number of daily flights, which allows multiple connection options. This reduces the risk of being stranded for long hours in case of delays, as there are more alternatives to reorganize the itinerary.

❌ Cons of Tocumen International Airport

1. Old and Problematic Terminal 1

Terminal 1 has aging facilities, problems with air conditioning, and bathrooms with lack of maintenance. It is also more prone to congestion due to its less efficient distribution.

2. Deficient Customer Service

Many travelers report negative experiences with immigration, security, and customer service personnel, mentioning unhelpful or even rude attitudes.

3. Limited and Expensive Internet

Only one hour of free Wi-Fi is offered, which is insufficient for those who have long layovers. Subsequently, internet access is paid for and with high rates.

4. High Prices in Food and Duty-Free Shops

Prices in restaurants and shops are significantly higher than those in the city, which generates dissatisfaction among travelers.

5. Problems in Security Control

Passengers with flights to destinations with strict regulations must pass a second control at the boarding gate, where even liquids purchased inside the airport can be confiscated.

6. Hidden Charges in Car Rentals

Non-transparent practices have been reported in some agencies, such as the imposition of mandatory insurance not mentioned in the reservation.

7. Lack of Comfortable Rest Areas

Especially in Terminal 1, the seats are uncomfortable and the rest areas are scarce.

8. Maintenance and Lighting Problems

Some areas of the airport have poor lighting and cleaning problems.

9. Scarcity of Areas Adapted for Families

There are few play areas or comfortable spaces for families with young children.

10. Limited Healthy Dining Options

For those looking for more balanced options, the variety is reduced and the prices are high.
